Orange Shirt Day 2025
September 30th is the National day of Truth and Reconciliation.
Truth and Reconciliation Day (also known as Orange Shirt Day), observed in Canada on September 30th, is a day dedicated to acknowledging and addressing the injustices and impacts of the residential school system on Indigenous communities. It is a time to honor the survivors and victims of this oppressive system, reflect on the profound historical and ongoing trauma inflicted upon Indigenous peoples, and engage in dialogue about reconciliation. The day serves as a call to action for all Canadians to educate themselves about Indigenous histories, support the healing process, and work towards meaningful change in pursuit of justice and equity. It represents a critical step in the broader journey towards healing and rebuilding relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.
What is Orange Shirt Day?
Orange Shirt Day is an initiative started by residential school survivor Phyllis Webstad, Northern Secwepemc (Shuswap) from the Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation, to raise awareness of residential schools and spread the message that every child matters (pltcanada.org). The day gets its name from Webstad, who had her new orange shirt taken away on her first day at a residential school, only to never see it again. Wearing orange shirts on this day symbolizes support for survivors, acknowledges the traumatic history of these schools, and promotes the ongoing process of reconciliation and healing.
